Newspaper recycling trial
As part of the CityRail's 2009 Customer Charter, we committed to starting a new waste paper recycling pilot at 10 stations across the CityRail network. The pilot commenced on 27 January 2009, and 11 stations were included to improve cleanliness on our trains and stations.
The stations were Epping, Parramatta, Blacktown, Liverpool, Chatswood, Strathfield, Merrylands, Penrith, Campbelltown, Cabramatta and Fairfield.
The pilot concluded on 24 April 2009.
Next steps
CityRail is committed to exploring sustainable waste management solutions which includes recycling and general waste bins on stations.
Waste paper recycling bins have been installed at the following CityRail stations Cabramatta, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Merrylands and Penrith. The recycling bins will complement the existing general waste bins by providing customers with paper recycling as well as general waste options.
A complete assessment of all CityRail stations in relation to wastepaper recycling is currently being undertaken. As part of this assessment RailCorp will be considering:
- Lessons learnt from the recycling pilot
- Different bin types based on specific station requirements
- Requirements in regards to security and safety
Where are we hoping to get to in relation to recycling on stations?
CityRail intends to develop and implement an operationally and financially viable approach for the introduction of paper recycling bins and general waste bins in order to improve cleanliness on trains and stations.
