Boarding the train

Most CityRail services have access to a portable platform-to-train ramp which can assist passengers (including those who use wheelchairs or motor scooters) to board or alight from the train safely. Boarding ramps are 800mm wide, have a maximum load tolerance of 300kg, and are located on either station platforms or Endeavour trains. The boarding ramp can be deployed for people with prams, mobility restriction, or any other valid need, however, CityRail strongly recommends that children are removed from prams prior to boarding the train.

Please note that the train may exceed the length of the platform at some stations. Passengers intending to alight at one of these stations should travel in the carriage with the Guard (marked with a blue light) or in the middle of the train. These have been indicated in station facilities with "short platform". Please confirm with station staff prior to boarding.

If you require boarding assistance, please:

  • check station facilities to ensure that, if you require a portable platform to train ramp, one is available;
  • contact the departure station and advise staff of your travel plans, so they can be ready to assist you; and
  • arrive at the station 15 minutes prior to your train, so preparations can be made to assist you.
If the station is attended, staff are available and the station has a boarding ramp on the platform, station staff will:
a) use the boarding ramp to help you board the train (usually near the guard's compartment);
b) notify the guard of your location on the train and your destination station; and
c) ring ahead to your interchange and destination stations to arrange for someone to assist you to alight and/or interchange trains.

If the station is unattended or staff are unavailable, and the station has a boarding ramp on the platform:
a) wait near the middle of the platform;
b) when the train arrives, ask the guard for boarding assistance;
c) the train guard will deploy the boarding ramp and assist you onto the train; and
d) the train guard will then phone ahead to your destination/interchange station so the boarding ramp is available for you to alight from the train; or
e) if no station staff are available at your destination/interchange station, the guard will deploy the boarding ramp for you to alight.

If the station has no boarding ramp, but you are using a station which is serviced by an Endeavour train which has one on board:
a) wait near the middle of the platform;
b) when the train arrives, ask the guard for boarding assistance;
c) the train guard will deploy the boarding ramp and assist you onto the train; and
d) the train guard will deploy the boarding ramp for you to alight at your nominated station.
