What programs does CityRail operate for schools and youth groups?

CityRail is committed to working in partnership with educators and students throughout NSW to provide safe travelling skills and information about rail travel. School students are our second largest daily commuter group and it is essential that they are well-instructed in safe practices when using rail services. CityRail has a number of educational initiatives to support our commitment to students.

For more information visit the Safety and education section.

As a student, what are my responsibilities?

Responsibilities include such activities as giving up your seat for an adult, taking your rubbish with you and behaving safely at all times. Unruly behaviour may result in the confiscation of your free school rail pass.

For a full list, visit the Student responsibilities page.

Do I have to give up my seat for an adult?

Yes. Students travelling on a free student pass are required to give up their seat for fare-paying customers. This condition is stipulated on your pass. Students not complying with the terms of their pass may have it confiscated.

For more information visit the Student responsibilities page.

If I'm travelling with a school pass, can I break my journey?

No. School passes are only for point-to-point journeys using the most direct route between your home and school. You are not entitled to break your journey. If you wish to, then you will have to purchase a valid ticket for that journey.

Free school passes are not available for travel to sports activities or school excursions. Please visit the Student rail passes page for a full description of conditions of usage.

I am planning a school excursion. Who can I speak to?

Speak with your local Station Manager; they are well positioned to meet your needs.

For more information visit the Excursions page.
