Compare car and train costs with our commuter calculator
  5 July 2006

Commuter cost calculatorWe’ve added a new feature to our website to enable you to compare the cost of travelling with CityRail with the expense involved in driving your car to work.

Simply go to our fare calculator, choose the stations where you wish to start and finish your journey and click through to the results page. If you click on the image under the "calculate" button, a new page will pop up to show you the weekly and yearly costs for running four different types of vehicle over a similar journey. You can even choose your petrol price from a drop down menu.

And the difference is impressive. For instance, a seven-day Rail Pass between Parramatta and Town Hall stations costs $37 while a 365-day FlexiPass is $1520. Our commuter calculator shows that, with petrol at $1.40 per litre, it costs $221 per week and $10,616 per year to use a small car to do the same trip.
