2009 CityRail timetable

RailCorp has developed a new CityRail timetable which will incorporate the new Epping to Chatswood rail link. The new timetable will be introduced on Sunday 11 October this year.
The integration of the Epping Chatswood link, together with other completed Clearways projects, will allow CityRail to increase capacity on the network to provide additional services.
The new timetable will see additional peak hour services, 6-car trains increased to 8-car trains on more services across Sydney to provide extra capacity, and additional off-peak services added to the late morning period on the South, North Shore, Western and Northern lines.
Rail services commenced on the new Epping to Chatswood rail link in February this year providing rail access to the Macquarie Park/North Ryde employment corridor for the very first time. Approximately 12,000 passengers per day are using the popular new link.
The introduction of the new timetable will integrate this new link into the broader CityRail network meaning that rail users will have direct services from the CBD and upper Northern/ lower North Shore lines to this popular new link.
The integration of the new Epping to Chatswood rail link into the CityRail timetable will provide a number of important benefits for customers including:
- additional peak services to the Western, South and East Hills;
- additional services between 9am and 12 noon for Western, South, Northern and North Shore passengers;
- additional carriages on peak hour trains to increase capacity;
- more even spread of patronage across peak hour trains;
- crowd relief at CBD stations;
- direct rail access to the Macquarie Park/North Ryde employment corridor.
The Northern Line will operate via a different route than it currently does, with services operating from Hornsby to the City via Macquarie Park, and then continuing to Epping via Strathfield.
The operation of Northern Line services via Macquarie Park means that CityRail can deliver additional peak services on the Western Line.
- A new morning peak service will operate from Quakers Hill to the North Shore, departing Quakers Hills at 7.10am, arriving at Town Hall at 8.04am and North Sydney at 8.14am.
- A new semi-fast afternoon peak service will operate from North Sydney to Quakers Hill. This service will depart North Sydney at 5.12pm, Town Hall at 5.22pm and will arrive at Quakers Hill at 6.15pm.
- A new express afternoon peak service will operate from North Sydney to Penrith. This service will depart North Sydney at 5.27pm, Town Hall at 5.37pm and will arrive at Penrith at 6.41pm.
- A new semi-fast afternoon peak service will operate from North Sydney to Penrith. This service will depart North Sydney at 6.27pm, Town Hall at 6.37pm and will arrive at Penrith at 7.47pm.
- In addition, two morning peak services from Quakers Hill to the City, which currently terminate at Central at 8.19am and 8.29am, will now extend to the North Shore via the CBD.
Benefits will also be provided during the off peak on the Western Line including:
- Services at Penrith, St Marys, Mt Druitt, Blacktown, Seven Hills, Westmead, Parramatta, Granville and Strathfield in both directions will increase from 4 to 6 services an hour in the off peak until approximately 11.30am.
- The hourly City to Riverstone service will now extend to Richmond providing two services an hour in the off-peak.
The new timetable will provide benefits to other CityRail lines including:
- A new fast afternoon peak service will be provided from Central to Campbelltown via Sydenham on the Airport & East Hills Line. This service will depart Central at 5.56pm, arriving at Campbelltown at 6.51pm.
- Structural changes to South Line services have enabled the provision of a new Liverpool to the City via Granville service departing Liverpool at 7.54am and arriving Central at 8.50am, providing crowding relief on South Line services.
- South Line services between Glenfield and the City via Granville in both directions will be increased to four services an hour in the off peak period until approximately 11.30am.
- Additional off peak services will be provided on the Northern and North Shore lines until approximately 11.30am.
Consultations about the new timetable
In developing the new timetable, RailCorp carried out extensive community consultation to ensure the proposed timetable was widely available for comment by the community. Consultation commenced on 24 November 2008 with presentations to commuter groups and key stakeholders, including the NSW Commuter Council.
Over 150,000 brochures were distributed at railway stations across the CityRail network during the consultation period to encourage passengers to provide feedback. The proposed timetable was placed on the CityRail website and posters with the timetables were displayed at stations. Feedback was also encouraged from all schools and universities that utilise the CityRail network.
CityRail placed posters at stations and advertisements in newspapers and on the radio to publicise the proposed timetable as widely as possible.
The public consultation period officially closed on 19 December 2008, although RailCorp did include feedback received after this date in its refinement of this timetable. A total of 2,080 submissions were received, with the majority of responses coming via the website.
Improvements made following consultations
Based on customer feedback the following service improvements have been incorporated in the proposed 2009 timetable.
- Additional weekend services on the Bankstown and Inner West lines; providing a regular 15 minute service (currently ½ hourly) during daylight hours.
- Adjusted services to cater for school children:
- Some Northern Line services will stop all-stations between Strathfield and Hornsby, eliminating the need to interchange at Epping. There are three services in the morning and two in the afternoon that will suit some school children's travel patterns.
- Other minor changes have been made to suit some school childrens travel patterns at Petersham, Wentworth Falls and Gosford.
- Extended the hours of service operation on the Northern Line, Western Line and North Shore Line.
- Reduced morning peak service gaps at Artarmon, Casula, Petersham, Lewisham, Stanmore and Summer Hill.
- In the late evening, improved connections at Blacktown for Richmond branch line services.
- In the late evening, provided regular interval departure times from Central on Blue Mountains Line services.
- Removed Eastwood stops on Newcastle/Central Coast intercity services arriving Central at 6.47am and 7.19am as well as services departing Central at 3.15pm and 3.45pm.
- Restored Macquarie Fields stops on early afternoon services departing Central between 3.00pm and 4.00pm.
- Reduced a late evening service gap on the North Shore Line at Hornsby for weekend services.
Consultation on the proposed Hunter Line timetable was undertaken from 20 April to 8 May 2009. Over 250 submissions were received during this period. Based on customer feedback the following service improvements have been incorporated in the proposed 2009 timetable.
- Restored stops at Metford for:
- All train services starting from Maitland/Telarah and travelling to Newcastle and return.
- The 6.02am Scone service to Newcastle, to service the local TAFE.
- The 8.22am Newcastle to Dungog service, to service the local TAFE.
- Extended a Maitland service to Telarah in the weekday afternoon peak period.
- Improved connections between the weekend 3.15pm Central to Newcastle service and Hunter services.
The period of community consultation has now closed. RailCorp appreciates and thanks CityRail customers for taking the time to provide feedback.
Minor adjustments are still being made to the timetable, but it will be available from the CityRail website from July, and in hard copy from September in the lead up to the October 11 introduction date.
CityRail will be running a comprehensive communications program in the lead up to the introduction to the new timetable to ensure customers are aware of the changes and can plan their travel.
