CityRail is continuing to upgrade the fleet to further improve reliability and passenger comfort.

Our two newest trains are the Hunter railcars and outer suburban cars or Oscars.

Key features of our new trains include:

• CCTV cameras;
• air-conditioning;
• accessible toilets on long distance services;
• on board passenger information displays;
• help points in each vestibule;
• wider stairways;
• highlighted doorways for greater safety;
• more comfortable seating with graffiti and fire resistant covering; and
• easy access for people with disabilities, the elderly and people with strollers.

Hunter railcars
Hunter Line

All 14 new carriages have now been delivered to RailCorp as part of a $102 million commitment to improving rail services on the Hunter Line.

The first two car train was launched on 22 November 2006 and entered passenger service the next day. The seventh and final two-car train entered service on 10 September 2007.

Each new train travelled more than 22,000 kilometres as part of an extensive testing program.

Hunter railcars are currently operating around 236 passenger services per week.

Outer suburban cars (Oscars)
Intercity and Sydney suburban lines

The Oscar will operate beyond the Sydney suburban area to intercity destinations such as Wyong (Newcastle & Central Coast Line), Springwood (Blue Mountains Line) and Kiama (South Coast Line).

The Oscars represent an investment of $439 million and their introduction will free up Tangara trains to augment services in high demand areas including the Western Line.

Oscars are currently operating around 278 weekly services on the South Coast Line.

The first four-car train of 122 carriages was launched on 15 December 2006, with others to be progressively introduced between now and mid 2008.

The eighth four-car train entered service on 22 October 2007 and now perform eight intercity services and two local services between Wollongong and Dapto daily. It includes a morning peak service departing from Dapto at 5.14am and arriving at Central Station at 6.59am and an evening peak service departing Central Station at 6.49pm and arriving at Kiama at 9.08pm.

On Monday 26 November 2007, an eight-car train began operation. Weekday services include the 6.00am Wollongong to Port Kembla; 6.22am Port Kembla to Bondi Junction; 8.32am Bondi Junction to Hurstville and the 5.19pm Martin Place to Port Kembla.
