Planning for excursions
Please plan in advance
Schools need to plan their travel well in advance of school trips.
- If you are planning on travelling in a group, please contact your local
CityRail station manager. You will need to provide the following information:
- date of travel
- proposed time of travel
- number in group
- contact details for the school
- boarding station
- CityRail will contact your nominated representative to advise you of the
most appropriate arrangements for your trip
Getting there
- While school students are very welcome to use CityRail’s services to travel
to events, the general public also uses CityRail’s services and consequently
during peak hours services can be very crowded
- CityRail requests that you do not commence your travel in the peak hours
(7-9am and 4-6pm)
- If travelling to events at Olympic Park, schools are reminded that due
to limited direct services to Olympic Park, schools travelling on the metropolitan
system should interchange at Lidcombe station for the Olympic Park Sprint
service
- No carriages or seats can be reserved on normal CityRail services
Travelling in groups
- We recommend that only small groups of up to 20 children and 1 teacher
/ carer travel together. Groups with larger numbers will need closer supervision
and should not expect to travel together on one train
- Infants also need close supervision and therefore should have a minimum
of one carer / teacher per 5 children
- Primary and secondary school children should have a minimum of one carer
/ teacher per 20 children
- Groups should be at the station 20 minutes prior to the train departure
time
- If more than one group is travelling on the same train, please ensure the
groups are spread over the entire train and not just one carriage
- It is essential that carers/teachers assist station staff with loading
students as quickly as possible onto trains so as to avoid delaying the train
- Teachers/carers are asked to maximise the number of children per seat on
the train
Ticketing
- Purchasing a child off-peak return ticket is the cheapest option. Please
remember that off-peak fares do not apply before 9am
- You can save up to 30% in fares if you travel in the off-peak
- If you are travelling in a group, a group ticket can be purchased at your
CityRail station on the day of travel only. Please be at the station in plenty
of time to allow for ticketing, and at least 20 minutes prior to the train
departure time
- Please remember you must have a valid ticket for each child before boarding
a train. If both the station and ticket vending machines are closed or not
operating you must purchase the tickets at your destination. Penalties do
apply for fare evasion
Safety
Safety is one of our highest priorities at CityRail. Here are a few tips to
help you have a safe journey with us:
- Trains are fast and very quiet. Always keep a safe distance by staying
behind the yellow line on the platform
- Watch your step when entering and leaving the train. There is sometimes
a gap between the platform and the carriage
- Don't change carriages whilst the train is moving
Courtesy
- Please allow other passengers to alight first before boarding the train
- Please move inside the carriages and do not stand in the vestibule area
- Please do not sit on steps, either at the station or on the train
- Please take your rubbish with you and dispose of it thoughtfully
- Please keep to the left when on stairs at stations
- Please be mindful of noise levels of large groups
- Please minimise movement once in a carriage
- Please give up seats for adults, elderly and less mobile customers
Important
You should also know that some things are strictly forbidden when travelling on
CityRail trains:
- Do not take short cuts across the train lines to reach another platform
- Do not take knives; spray cans or permanent marker pens onto stations and
trains. Police can charge people found with these items
- Do not throw any objects out of the train
- Do not put any part of your body outside the train
- Do not hold the train doors open when they are closing
- Do not put your feet up on the seats
- Do not use offensive language or behaviour
- Do not run on stairs, at stations or on trains
