Student Rail Pass

Student Rail Passes are issued at the beginning of the school year and are valid for the remainder of the school year. You apply for a new or replacement School Rail Pass/TAFE College Rail Pass through your college or school. TAFE student passes are issued for each semester.

For further details, including eligibility please visit the Concessions page or the Ministry of Transport website.

Ticketing rules for using your pass
  • When you see an adult on their feet, give up your seat.If you don't have a pass, you must buy a ticket.
  • You can only travel between the two stations shown on your pass, and you can't break your journey.
  • You are the only person allowed to use your pass.
  • You can only use your pass for travel on CityRail trains on school days from Monday to Friday. If you have a school function to attend on weekends, you must purchase a half-fare or concession ticket
  • May only be used for journeys between 6.30am and 6.30pm (School Rail Pass) or 9.30pm (TAFE Rail Pass).
  • Use the automatic gates to enter and leave the station.
  • You must give up your seat while travelling on your pass if there are insufficient seats for adult passengers.
  • CityRail staff and NSW police officers can ask to see your pass at any time. The maximum fine for fare evasion is $550.
If you break any of the above rules, your pass can be confiscated or you may be fined.
Make your pass last
  • Please look after your pass. Don't damage or alter it. If you do, your pass automatically becomes invalid.
  • If you have deliberately damaged or misused your pass, or if it is lost or stolen, you will have to pay a replacement fee of $21.00 for your new pass. Until you get a new pass, you will have to buy a ticket each time you use the train
  • The magnetic strip holds vital information, so it's not a good idea to store your pass next to any magnetic fields, including any card with a similar magnetic strip
Using the automatic gates
  • Use the ticket gates with a lit green arrow
  • If your pass doesn't work for some reason, see one of our station staff for assistance. You must apply for a new pass through your school as soon as possible. If the fault is not yours, there is no charge. While you wait for your new pass you can use the defective one to show CityRail staff
