Student rail passes

School students at Central StationFree School Student Rail Passes are issued to eligible primary and secondary school students at the beginning of each school year. Passes are also issued to eligible full-time TAFE students under the age of 18.

You can only use your pass to travel between the stations shown on the pass and your journey must commence before 7.00pm (9.30pm for TAFE students) on school days, Monday to Friday. You will need to buy a ticket if you are travelling by train to any other location or at any other time. Break of journey is not permitted.

Always remember to carry your School Student Rail Pass when you're travelling on the train. CityRail station staff, transit officers and police can ask to see your pass at any time. If you don't have your pass, you must buy a ticket.

Your rail pass is not transferable and can't be used by anyone except you.

Code of conduct

Your School Student Rail Pass is a privilege, not a right, and comes with a few conditions. By accepting it, you are agreeing to abide by the code of conduct for students travelling by train.

If you don't follow the rules:

  • your pass may be confiscated
  • you may be fined
  • CCTV footage of any incidents may be shown to your school principal.

Vandalism is a serious criminal offence. Students caught tagging, etching or vandalising stations or trains will be arrested and may face criminal charges.

Applications and replacements

To apply, complete the School Student Rail Pass application form available from your school or TAFE. Your application will be assessed against eligibility criteria set by Transport for NSW.

If your pass is captured or damaged by the automatic ticket gates, ask station staff for assistance.

If your pass is lost, stolen, damaged or confiscated, call RailCorp Passes and Concessions on 1300 302 130 or e-mail passes&concessions@railcorp.nsw.gov.au to obtain a replacement. Fees apply.
