Your guide to Sydney trains

Student responsibilities

In order to retain your free school rail pass, all students are to behave in a manner that ensures both your comfort and safety and that of other passengers:

  • Students about to board a trainWhen waiting for the train, stand well behind the yellow line on the platform.
  • Make sure your school backpack is not over the yellow line even if your body is well clear.
  • Mind the gap between the train and the platform when boarding or getting off the train.
  • You should only cross the train tracks via a footbridge, underpass or at a designated pedestrian crossing. Crossing the tracks is dangerous and illegal. The current penalty is up to $5,500.
  • Please don't push fellow passengers or run on the platform.
  • Please don't leave your school bag in the way of other passengers, either on the platform or the train. On the train, please don't obstruct the doors, stairs or aisles.
  • Inline skating, skateboarding and bike riding are not permitted on the platform.
  • If you drop something on the tracks, never jump down on the tracks to retrieve it. Ask a station staff member to help you.
  • Do not put any part of your body outside the train or hold the doors open when they are closing.
  • Students should not change carriages while the train is moving.
  • If you see something unsafe, don't be afraid to speak up and tell a staff member.
  • Please offer your seat to other passengers particularly those who are elderly, pregnant or have a disability.
  • Ask station staff or the train guard if you are unsure or confused about what to do or where to go on your journey.

When you see an adult on their feet, give up your seat. Show you care, be more bag aware. Watch your mates' back, keep them off the track. Before getting out, don't leave rubbish about.
